Season three of Big Mouth has FINALLY arrived on Netflix, as of today (4 October).

Having confirmed it would definitely be returning after season two finished last year, Netflix also revealed that the show was renewed for a further three seasons.

The show, which first aired in 2017, pretty much became an instant cult hit, racking up an impressive 8.0 on IMDB and an unbeatable 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes; not to mention critical acclaim and even a couple of award nominations.

In the past, discussing the show, the team behind it have said they draw on their own teenage experiences to come up with their ideas; apparently Nick and Andrew loosely based on creators Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg.

Speaking about how they approach hiring new writers, co-creator Mark Levin revealed to a PalyeyFest panel: “Whenever we interviewed a writer for the show we’d always say, ‘Tell us about what it was like when you had your first period, or what it was like when you were caught masturbating’.

“That was the litmus test because they had to be able to freely open up. We made the room a really safe place where everyone could talk about that.”

It’s not surprising that Netflix agreed to the extension, thanks to the show’s popularity.

Mike Moon, head of adult animation for Netflix, said at the time: “Big Mouth brilliantly captures the most awkward phase in a person’s life, puberty, in a hilarious yet heartwarming way.

“We couldn’t be more excited to continue our relationship with Brutus Pink and bring more stories, more humour, and more hormones to Netflix members around the world.”

The coming of age show follows a group of middle schoolers, all of who are trying to come to terms with their changing bodies, emotions and the general onset of puberty. It’s a tricky time for the best of us, and it sees them attempt to circumnavigate various friendships, budding relationships, and social challenges – all with the help of their hormone monsters.

Ahead of the release of the second season, Kroll told Variety that writing the show was therapeutic.

He said: “My hope is that people can watch this as a little bit of catharsis of what they were like and how far they’ve come.”

But for now, while we patiently await more information on seasons four, five and six, we have the first two and now the third to get stuck in to.
